Whether you have blonde highlights, balayage, or all over platinum locks, making sure your blonde stays looking fresh can be a challenge. That’s where purple shampoo comes in; it helps to remove that unwanted brassy tone! We know you may have some questions about how it works, so we wanted to answer some of the most asked questions for you.

Q: How often should I use purple shampoo?
A: It can vary based on several factors including the natural colour of your hair as well as your desired tone. Hair type can also affect how colour absorbs in your hair, so it’s important to adjust based on your own unique needs. For maintenance, we usually recommend using purple shampoo once every 2 to 5 washes.

Q: How do I use purple shampoo?  How long do I leave purple shampoo in?
A: You use it like any other shampoo when you wash, and purple shampoos do not need to sit in the hair. If you want an ashier tone or feel you need to use it more often, you can leave it on for a few extra minutes, just making sure to do what feels best for your unique hair needs and the tone you want to maintain!

Q: Will purple shampoo turn my hair purple?
A: It can, yes! Purple shampoos are not typically used for every wash. Once you get your hair to the tone you want, you should just use purple shampoo every few washes. Using it for every wash can result in your hair taking on a purple hue.

Q: I want to keep my hair a nice blonde, but the purple shampoo is too drying for my hair! What can I do?
A: If you are liking your purple shampoo but need some extra moisture, I would suggest trying a leave-in conditioner like Unite 7SECONDS Detangler. If you'd prefer a product that gives both moisture and toning in one, we also have some amazing toning treatments! Look at the AG Care Sterling Silver Mask, or Goldwell Dualsenses Silver 60Sec Treatment.

Q: Oops I left my purple shampoo on too long! What should I do now?
A: Not to worry! This will fade out, but there are a few options to help speed up the process. If it is just a slight tone too much, a simple wash with your regular shampoo may be enough to take care of it. If you need something stronger, though, try using a clarifying shampoo instead! Our Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo Three or the L'anza Healing ColorCare Clarifying Shampoo are two great choices to help banish that unwanted purple tone without damaging your hair.

Q: Will the purple shampoo stain my hands?
A: It will also add tone to your hands when using; however, it should wash off with a good soap and water scrub. If you want to protect your hands and nails from any toning, you can also use gloves to apply your purple shampoo.

Q: I have used purple shampoo, but my hair still feels too brassy. What should I do?
A: If your hair is naturally dark brown, black, or red, it can sometimes hold on to more brass than we would like. If, even after using a purple shampoo for every wash, you still feel you are not getting your desired tone, you may need to switch to a line with more of a blue undertone. The Matrix Total Results Dark Envy Collection or the Pureology Color Fanatic Top Coat Blue Toning Glaze are great choices!
