Embrace your natural wavy hair and free your curls! Did you know that over half of the population has a natural texture to their hair? From a slight wave to coiled spirals, the majority of us fight against our natural texture to create the looks we love. But why not love the texture you have? With the right products and a diffuser, you can encourage gorgeous curls from natural wavy hair or whip tighter coils into a voluptuous look.

Do you have natural wavy hair or looser curls? Check out the tutorial from Celebrity Stylist Cindy Duplantis below! Or if you have tighter, more coily curls, be sure to scroll down for a tutorial from our friends at DevaCurl!

First step: start with completely soaked hair. Many curly hair types tend to have drier hair, so try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner in the shower. Ones to try: Design.Me Gloss.Me Shampoo and Conditioner. When you get out of the shower, don't put your hair up in a towel. Instead, continue to the next step.

It's time to apply product! You will want one moisture product and one hold product. Which products you choose will depend on how much moisture you feel you will need (Is your hair very dry? Or more on the normal side?) and how much hold you need (Does your hair tend to hold style quite well? Or does it tend to fall flat quickly?)

First, work the moisture product through hair, starting at the ends and working upward. Moisture products to try: oily to normal hair can benefit from a detangling spray like Redken One United. Dry hair will benefit from a heavier moisturizer, like Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame, which, true to its name, helps control frizz.

Next, apply the hold or styling products starting on the ends and working up. To help build volume on top, lift up as you apply and twist pieces to help start coaxing curls. Hold products to try: For lighter hold: Ouidad Climate Control Featherlight Styling Cream. For stronger hold, try Design.Me Bounce.Me, which has moisturizing qualities as well.

Scrunch out some of the water and then air dry for as long as possible before diffusing.
Natural Wavy Hair diffuser

Using the diffuser attachment on your blow dryer, diffuse curls, scrunching up from the bottom towards your scalp and holding in place until dry or hot before moving to the next section. Using your fingers, loosely pull hair up from the roots and direct the blow dryer for more volume. If your hair has become too curly for your liking, flip your head over and loosely pull with your fingers to elongate your curls while applying air from your blow dryer. Blow dryer to try: Gama Professional iQ Dryer

On a side note, I have naturally very straight hair without a hope of texture. Always wanting natural wavy hair, I decided to try Cindy's tutorial, with amazing results! I transformed my pin-straight, no-hope-for-waves 'do into a wavy mane. So if you have very straight hair, give it a try. You may be pleasantly surprised! Check out my before and after below.

Natural Curls

Using DevaCurl Supermousse, dispense an egg-sized amount of product into your palm. Rake the product through your strands to apply, using more if needed. Don't be shy, the more the merrier! Glide the products down strands to evenly coat.

Scrunch out some of the water and then air dry for a bit before diffusing.
Natural Curly Hair Dryer

You can air dry completely or finish drying using the diffuser attachment on your blow dryer. Diffuse curls, scrunching up from the bottom towards your scalp and holding in place until dry or hot before moving to the next section. Loosely pull hair up from the roots and direct the blow dryer for more volume. If your hair has become too curly for your liking, flip your head over and loosely pull with your fingers to elongate your curls while applying air from your blow dryer. Blow dryer to try: DevaCurl Professional Dryer.

Shine oil for curls

Once dry, add shine and definition with a shine serum like DevaCurl High Shine Multi-Benefit Oil.
