How to Care For Aging Hair

Age is a number to be celebrated. Age is beauty; it is experience; it is a lifetime and it is a goal to be admired. That's not to say aging doesn't come with challenges. For many of us, it is also a source of insecurity. Throughout our lives our bodies change, and some of those changes can be uncomfortable, both physically and emotionally. When we are accustomed to seeing ourselves a certain way, it can be frustrating to look in the mirror and see changes that we aren't comfortable with. And sometimes it's hard to know how to adapt our routines to work with those changes. Today we are going to chat about how to care for aging hair.

Protect Your Hair

As hair ages its natural lipid layers decrease. Lipids are a thick layer of fatty molecules that protect hair against excessive damage. So UV rays, rough brushing, hot hair tools, can all leave hair damaged and dull. Work with products that protect and preserve your hair to supplement this layer and keep hair healthy.

Try this protecting pick:

Protection with Keratin

It’s a 10 Miracle Oil + Keratin is a protectant and keratin treatment all-in-one. It protects and penetrates the hair shaft to strengthen from the inside out.

Grey Hair Care

Grey Hair

Pigment loss can occur even in younger hair, and of course the result is the one most often associated with aging: grey or white hair. You can embrace your new natural colour, you can colour it or you can tone it!

If you have always coloured your hair and would like to embrace your natural grey, click here for tips to help you grow out your natural colour gracefully.

A word of warning: often times grey hair is stubborn and doesn't take to chemical processes very well. Colour tends to fade and needs regular care to upkeep, so if you go the colour route, try these tips for all things colour!

Somewhere between your natural colour and coloured hair is toning. Toning is a colour correction using contrasting pigments to neutralize unwanted tones. So in greying hair that has a brassy hue, the yellow tones can be cooled down to a more cool grey or platinum without a full colour process. This is a great way to rock your natural colour with a little help.

Grey hair can be toned in the salon, or you can try a purple shampoo at home! Purple shampoo is an easy and inexpensive way to boost your natural grey or silver.

Give Your Hair Extra Moisture

Throughout our lives our scalps produce natural oils to moisturize our scalp and strands. Over time our scalps don’t produce as much oil, which results in dry strands and scalp. Luckily there are products that will help maintain moisture.

At-home hair masks and in-salon treatments can be major thirst-quenchers to help treat dryness. At home, try Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Mask with marine botanicals to deeply infuse moisture into strands. Or, for more intense and targeted results, add a treatment to your next salon service. Your Stylist can determine the best one for your hair type for brilliant results!

Use a Haircare System That Cares For Your Hair Type

There are quite a few products that target different hair types. Here are some of my recommendations that may help you decide what will work for you!

Brittle, Damaged Hair

Look for hair care with ingredients like panthenol, wheat protein, or Q10. All have strengthening properties to reduce breakage. BC Bonacure Q10 Time Restore Miceller Shampoo, Conditioner and Mask stimulate the production of Keratin to help hair gain strength naturally.

Dry Hair and Scalp

Redken's All Soft Mega Shampoo and Conditioner is such a great moisturizing combo and leaves hair so soft and healthy feeling. I also recommend Alterna Caviar Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. They not only moisturize, but also contain Alterna's Age-Control Complex for stronger healthier hair and are rich in lipids to help protect hair.

Colour Care

Good news for colour enthusiasts – there are loads of options to help you care for your colour. I would recommend shampoos and conditioners from Pureology – with sulfate-free, gentle formulas they are leaders in colour-fade formulas. For ultimate softness and shine try Pureology Nanoworks Gold to transform dull, coarse hair while keeping colour from fading.

Grey or Silver Hair

Bring out the lustre and the coolest shades of grey and silver with purple shampoo. Try out fan favourite AG Hair's Sterling Silver Shampoo and Conditioner. For an extra dose of brilliance, try the Sterling Silver Mask!

Hair Loss

Thinning hair can be a complex issue and there are lots of products that can help! The condition of your scalp largely impacts hair growth and loss. To promote a healthy scalp I recommend products containing Stemoxydine, which increases oxygen levels in the scalp to promote regeneration of hair lost through hypoxia, a condition that deprives follicles of oxygen. Try Serioxyl, a line of hair care products exclusive to Chatters Hair Salons in Canada, that are specifically formulated for hair loss concerns. The formulas also include antioxidants strand plumping ingredients to give the appearance of fuller hair. Read more about Serioxyl and how these products lead the way in hair loss tech.

Nioxin is also a leader in hair loss solutions. They offer systems that target specific hair types and thinning; read more on which system may be right for you in this Nioxin System guide.

I hope these tips and product recommendations help you find something that works for you! If you still have trouble sorting out what you need, stop by a Chatters Hair Salon near you and chat with a Stylist or Beauty Consultant. Here's to looking and feeling your best, and having great hair days at any age!
