Are you looking for a unique style to freshen your look? A braided headband adds a fun twist to an everyday look and is surprisingly easy to pull off! We’re showing you how to get the look two ways. Follow along with Celebrity Stylist Cindy Duplantis for a six-braid coloured headband, or try a two-braid headband with Chatters Stylist Cia Hurlburt.
In order to create braids that are long enough to criss-cross over the top of your head, these braided headband tutorials work best on longer hair. If your hair is a bit too short, try extensions! To get started on creating your braided headband, the following products will help make your task a little easier.
Temporary Colour: If you’d like to add a splash of colour to your braids, try Kerachroma Coloured Dry Shampoo or KMS Style Color Sprays. Braided Headband with 6 Braids
First up, let’s try Cindy’s six-braid coloured headband! With the addition of temporary colour, this look would be perfect at a festival. If you’re not into colour, no worries! Simply skip the temporary colour spray and rock this style au naturel. Be sure to follow through to the end of the tutorial where Cindy takes the half-up braid and turns it into a full updo. Perfect for those sweltering hot days when you really want to get your hair up off your neck and forehead. Let’s check it out!
Create 2 sections of hair, one behind your ears, the other in front. Clip away the back section to keep it out of the way for now.
Next create 6 braids between your ears, over the top of your head. Start your sections by your natural part line or by creating a centre part and then braid each side into 3 braids for 6 total.
Make sure when you braid your sections to leave a couple of centimetres loose at the end and fasten with a thin elastic.
Using Verb Volume Texture Powder, pump product along each braid. This will help with Step 5 and give great grip and texture.
Starting from the elastic end, begin lightly pulling out sections of the braid, all the way up to the beginning of the braid. This relaxes the braid, fattening it and giving texture.
Here’s where you can add in some fun colour if you like! For this step you’ll want to cover up with an old towel, sheet or styling cape, to protect your clothes while you spray. A small towel can also be used to put under each braid as you spray, to avoid your face becoming part of the design. This is the fun part! Time to get creative and play with colour. Cindy has chosen to use a rose gold colour and a blue colour. Other fun pairings could include blue and green theme for a mermaid look, or pinks and purples for a romantic feel. The possibilities are endless! Spray your braids until they are nicely covered in your chosen hues and let dry. Don't forget to wash your hands once you're done! Let your coloured braids dry completely before the next step.
You're now going to criss-cross the braids, from left to right, using bobby pins to secure at the ends. Get creative, place the braids where you like them best. Don't worry about any ends that stick up, you can tuck in as needed later.
Once you're happy with your criss-cross look, take out the back section of your hair. You can leave this as a natural look or style as you desire. Textured waves pair really well with the braided headband. Simply curl with a curling iron or flat iron and add texture spray, such as Joico Beach Shake Texturizing Spray.
Spray lightly with hairspray, remembering to touch on any little pieces that were sticking up to hold them in place.

Add 4 more braids at the back, 2 on either side below the ear.
Follow steps 3 - 8, then cross around the back of the head, fastening with your bobby pins. Finish with hairspray and voila!
This style serves up major festival vibes. Since I’m writing this during the summer of 2020, (forever noted in history as the summer of the coronavirus pandemic) I can’t wait for future festivals and fairs. This will definitely be my go-to look! Until then, I’ll rock this look in my living room.
Braided Headband with 2 Braids
Now let’s try the 2 braid version with Cia!
Cia’s braided headband starts with curls. Spray a heat protectant on your strands and curl with a 1” curling iron. Cia is using the Hot Tools Curl Bar.
Break up curls with your fingers and spray with a texture spray to build body and fullness. One to try: Joico Beach Shake Texturizing Spray.
Section hair just above your ears and create two braids, one on each side of your head. Apply texture powder or spray to help the braids stay in place. One to try: Verb Volume Texture Powder
Wrap each braid up and over, pinning in place on the opposite side of your head.
If you want to add a little extra, place accessories or embellishments in your headband. Cia chose some cute flower adornments.
