Sweater weather is officially here! Looking for a hairstyle that pairs perfectly with your cool-weather wardrobe? Celebrity Stylist Cindy Duplantis (@cindyduplantis) chatted top trends with Torri Webster (@torriwebster) during the Chatters Fall and Winter Press Preview Event where they dished on alllllll the Instagram-worthy trends this season. From colours to hair care, here are the top fall and winter hair trends for 2020.

Fall and Winter Style Trends

PONYTAILS

"The ponytail is a hairstyle that’s in every season." Cindy says. "The pony really means something different depending on where it’s placed on the head. If you think about it, a high pony can be super sporty or high fashion. Whereas a low sleek pony is a bit more business style. They’re just so classic, clean and they always work."

"This season we're loving the naturally textured ponytail, adding volume to the look and encouraging us to embrace our hair’s texture. The perfect way to finish off this look is to set the sides of your pony in place with a product like MOROCCANOIL Luminous Hairspray in Strong and enhance the volume of your pony by applying AG HAIR Dry Wax to the ends. Textured pony, is now the #TONY."

BARELY-THERE WAVES

The slightly-tousled look has reached a whole new cool with the barely-there wave. How to get the perfect effortless look this fall? Cindy shares her secrets for the best tousle: "Once you get out of the shower, apply a straightening or smoothing serum or cream with a heat protector. Then using your Wet Brush, you're going to blow dry your hair in alternating motions, towards and away from the face to give more of a straight effect. Product recommendations: REDKEN One United leave in conditioning spray with heat protector (for fine to normal hair) or ALTERNA Caviar Anti-Frizz Blow Out Butter (for textured, frizz-prone hair). From mid length to your ends, you're going to wrap your hair around your HOT TOOLS 1-Inch - 1 1/4-Inch curling iron, leaving the ends out. It’s super simple and gives you that effortlessly chic look. This style is stunning on lobs as well, because it provides just the right amount of texture. A shaggy lob gives a new spin to the bob shape."

GLAMOUR CURLS

"Glamour curls are here in a big way," says Cindy. "The difference in these curls from the previous looks is that before we were wrapping the hair around the curling iron, whereas for glamour curls we are first placing the hair inside the tong of the curling iron and then wrapping it tightly around like a ribbon effect; this will help give the hair a smoother, more glamorous curl."

CINDY'S HOT TIP: "Make sure to do this from root to end. It gives off that old Hollywood style look that’s a bit more polished and put together.

For glamourous shine, prep hair with a hair mask, such as AG Hair Nourish mask to make hair it's healthiest and shiniest. Then work through a shine serum, like Pureology's Shine Bright Taming Serum, before blow drying.

NATURAL TEXTURE

Show off your natural texture! Many times when we are styling, we work against our natural textures straightening or curling to create our desired look. Embracing natural texture is so on trend and so unique because it varies so greatly between individuals. Cindy recommends playing with colour, which can add some really nice depth and dimension to curly looks. Additionally, product can really help enhance texture and give you the style you want. Frizz control is key: try Ouidad Climate Control shampoo and conditioner to start. When hair is soaking wet layer in product to help enhance your texture. An all-in-one leave-in conditioner and multi-benefit spray can really help keep frizz at bay and keep hair moisturized. One to try: Moroccanoil All-in-One Leave-in Conditioner. Try not to pull on your hair as you apply product, but rather scrunch product through to maintain natural curl and wave. On second-day hair, try a curl refresher spray to give your bounce back, like Ouidad's Botanical Boost Curl Energizing and Refreshing Spray.

HOT TIP: Try sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to help keep hair from getting frizzy overnight. The material doesn't snag or pull at curls while you sleep. One to try: Kenneth Bernard Hello Beautiful embroidered satin pillowcase.

BANTU KNOTS

Bantu knots are an ultra-trendy way to keep the front of your hair out of your eyes while allowing the back texture to really pop! Using gel, such as AG Hair's Hard Jel, work through the front section of your hair for maximum hold. Section the front into small ponytails and then twist the ponytails until they curl down on themselves. Pin into place and voila! To amp up the look even further, Cindy recommends adding a ribbon to the twists for a pop of colour, or pinning with embellished pins or accessories.

THE MONEY PIECE

This nod to the 90's is back in a major way and we couldn't be more excited! Big, bold pops of colour around your face really make a statement and we're here for it!

Cindy dishes on her love of the money piece: "Money pieces [face-framing highlights] are everything right now. It’s great for those who want that pop of colour or are looking to switch up their style, but aren’t ready to commit to a full head of colour. What I love is that there are ways to alter this look. You can only go a few shades lighter using a smaller section of hair to achieve a subtle difference. Or, you can make a bold statement by going drastically lighter with a larger section of hair. You can experiment with colour and make those money pieces pink, green, blue, whatever! You can also switch up your colour at home whenever the mood strikes, using our CELEB LUXURY Viral Colorwash & Colorditioner that lasts between 3 - 10 washes, making it super fun and non-committal. You can play off your eye colour too, which can really make them pop!

TRENDING COLOURS

“If you're looking for more of a full head of colour, this year we’re seeing colours like deep teal and even denim blue coming out to play," Cindy shares. "If platinum blonde was your summer colour, we're altering your shade by toning it with either a warm blonde or a cool blonde to give a more multi-dimensional look to transition your hair into Fall/Winter. If natural colours are more your thing, try using our CELEB LUXURY Gem Lites Colorwash and Colorditioner to help enhance and add richness to your natural tone. A few great colour options for this Fall/Winter are Sapphire, Cognac and Fire Opal."

HAIR CLIPS AND BARRETTES

"Do face masks count as a fall and winter trend?" asks Cindy. "Hair clips, or barrettes if you will, are still trendy and can actually be used to secure your face mask to your head to relieve some of the pressure from your ears.

Fall and Winter Hair Care Trends

TREATING DRYNESS

As temperatures dip, our skin and hair struggle to hold on to moisture. Cindy shares these tips for battling dryness over the fall and winter months.

Dry Scalp:

If you're suffering from dry scalp, you need a great exfoliant. One of my favourite products that just hit the shelves at Chatters is a must try: ALTERNA My Hair My Canvas New Beginnings Exfoliating Cleanser.

Dryer than Normal Hair:

Just like your skincare changes from summer to winter, so should your hair care! This is the time to add a shampoo and conditioner combo that infuses more moisture into your hair. Try out the DESIGN ME Gloss.Me Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner or the PUREOLOGY Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner.

Extremely Dry with Brittle Ends:

This is hair SOS! It's time for a deep conditioning mask and treatment. Chatters has an array of masks and treatments to save the day. Check out the AG HAIR Reconstruct Strengthening Mask, REDKEN Extreme Mega Mask, or the LOMA Moisturizing Treatment.
