No doubt about it, stepping out of the salon with a fresh colour has got to be one of the most fabulous feelings out there. If only that feeling could be bottled and bathed in daily! So why not try to keep those feels going as long as possible? If you’ve got great colour and want to keep it from fading try these top 10 tips for making your colour last!
1. Wait 48-72 hours to wash your hair after a colour service
Waiting an appropriate amount of time to wash will allow your hair cuticles to fall back into place and seal in your hair colour. |
2. Use Professional Salon Products
Colouring and lightening your hair changes its ph levels, meaning you will need to treat it differently than you had before. The ph levels in professional salon hair products are properly balanced, making them gentler and healthier for lightened and coloured hair. |
3. Use sulfate-free cleansing
While sulfates do an excellent job of cleaning dirt and grime, they may work a little too good to be used on our coloured hair. Since sulfates are fairly intense cleansers they can also wash away colour more quickly. Sulfate-free cleansing is gentler, and works to remove oil and dirt, leaving our hair colour intact. |
Like all Pureology products, Hydrate Shampoo contains Pureology's exclusive anti-fade complex.
4. Use less heat when styling
Heat can compromise the colour that you worked so hard to maintain, and cause even natural non-colour treated hair to become dull and prone to breakage. To style without heat, look for hairstyles that can allow hair to air dry, or use product wherever possible to replace heat. But lets face it, for most of us heat styling is a must for creating our looks. So here's how to slay that look while minimizing damage! We recommend using no more than 350 degrees F when heat styling. And always, ALWAYS, use a thermal protectant. More on protection in our next topic... |
5. Use protection
Heat, UV rays and other environmental aggressors can all fade colour fast. There are lots of products that can help minimize this damage, while nourishing your hair and delivering other colour-boosting benefits! Here are my faves: |

6. Maintain a healthy cuticle
A healthy hair cuticle = healthy hair. Cuticles lay flat like shingles on the hair shaft to protect the cortex, the place where the colour is held. Lightening and colouring requires these cuticles to lift, leaving colour exposed to damage, and prone to dullness and frizz. To keep cuticles flat and healthy, try to reduce friction and maintain a healthy ph level. |

Sleep in satin or silk for friction-free slumber. Other materials can roughen cuticles overnight, while silk or satin allows hair to glide without even the slightest of snags. Try an embroidered satin pillowcase from Kenneth Bernard. | AG Hair Natural Remedy Spray detangles to further reduce friction, and uses apple cider vinegar to balance the ph levels in the hair. |
7. Use at-home toning and colour enhancing products
There are ways you can combat fade and any unwanted hues that pop up over time! If you have blonde hair that has turned brassy, cool the yellow with purple shampoo. Dark hair can sometimes take on unwanted warm tones which can be cooled with toning shampoo as well. For colours that have started to fade, boost their vibrancy with pigmented shampoos, conditioners and masks that come in a variety of colours! |

9. Use cooler temperatures when washing hair
Hot water can open the cuticle leaving colour vulnerable to wash out. Try turning down the temperature to keep the cuticle closed and colour protected. |
10. Condition and Moisturize
Coloured hair can crave moisture, feed it with deep conditioner and masks. While it doesn’t necessarily make your colour last longer, it will help the overall integrity of your hair. Like dry shampoo, there are sooooo many masks. And they all work to target specific hair concerns. Here is a selection that specifically works to help extend colour life, strengthen stressed hair and deeply hydrate. |
