We linked up with award winning hairstylist Jennifer Dartch from our Fanshawe location in London to talk all about why your hair history is so important. 

Why is it so important to us hairstylists to have your "client history" when you come in for a service? Most clients think when we ask what they’ve done to their hair in the past they think we're interested in the last 3-6 months or so. But you couldn’t be more wrong! "Client history" is basically the entire lifetime record of your hair. So if your hair is 2 feet long there’s about 4 years worth of history in there.

Hair History is Forever

So now that you know what client history means,  you probably want to know why we want to know. Every single colour or perm or chemical service you’ve had on your hair is all still in there! Just because you had blonde highlights a year ago and coloured it brown 6 months ago doesn’t mean your balayage is gone. All it’s history is still there.

So why is it important to tell us stylists everything? Without knowing what you’ve done to your hair in the past we can’t properly formulate your colour to get you to where you want to be. There might be old red hair colour in there from a year ago that prevents us from getting you to the blonde you’ve asked for!

Avoid Overlapping Your Blonde

The other major issue in not sharing your hair's history is this;  it could have a huge affect on the health of your hair and make a big difference on what type of colour we can use on you, not to mention the strength of the colour. If you have a lot of old blonde on those ends and want to go blonde again it could cause a lot of damage by overlapping.

Another thing you might want to mention is how often you're using heat tools on your hair. Using a hair straightener or curling iron on your strands every day can take a toll on your hair and may have an affect on future colour appointments.

The main reason why we want to know your history is because we want to give you the most realistic expectations. If we don’t know what we are starting with then there’s no way for us to guarantee we can get you to your desired look! So the moral of the story is just to be honest!  Because in the end all we want is to make you happy and give you the healthiest most beautiful hair!
