Your Guide to Our Style Consciously Pillars with Clean, Vegan, Cruelty-Free & Sustainable Beauty

Lorie Knickle April 07, 2021

Beauty is more than skin deep. How we choose to fuel our bodies -- the foods we eat, our fitness levels, our lifestyle choices -- all contribute to our health and beauty. What we apply to the surface of our bodies can make an impact as well, not only to our own health and beauty, but also to the world around us. Choosing hair and beauty products that are free from toxins, considerate of the environment and cause no harm to animals can not only benefit you, it can also benefit the world around you.

Making mindful choices about our health can be overwhelming. When it comes to hair and beauty there are so many options. Chatters has created a system to help clarify those choices. Look for these symbols as you shop to help you make more conscious choices.

But what do they mean? And why are they important? Let's take a closer look at each one.

Products that are labelled Clean at Chatters are free-from:

  • Parabens
  • Sulfates (SLS, SLES)
  • Phthalates
  • Talc
  • Formaldehyde
  • Formaldehyde releasing agents

Choosing products with more natural ingredients can certainly make your hair and beauty routine nourishing.

Not sure where to start? These product collections get the Clean stamp of approval and are formulated with a high level of natural ingredients:

Loma Natural haircare

Loma knows what it means to be Clean. Aloe vera and pure water star as base ingredients and that's just the start of the wholesome goodness that goes into each product.

AG Naturals Haircare

Formulated with up to 98% natural ingredients, this product line has feel-good products from haircare to styling.

Clean Hair Products

cruelty-free hair products

Cruelty-Free brands do not test their products on animals, nor do their products contain ingredients that have been tested on animals. To be considered Cruelty-Free at Chatters a brand must be certified by Peta or Leaping Bunny, organizations known for their strict cruelty-free standards.

Get started with these Cruelty-Free brands:

Paul mitchell products

Paul Mitchell has been a pioneer in professional cruelty-free products since 1980. They proudly boast that they have never, and never will, test on animals.

If you haven't tried Hempz consider this your moment to try a fan-favourite brand. Hempz is well-known for body care (with scrumptious scented lotions!), but don't miss out on their haircare options as well!

Cruelty-Free Hair Products

vegan hair products

Oftentimes we think vegan and cruelty-free have the same meaning, but they are quite different. Vegan focusses on ingredients that are not derived from animals (rather than tested on animals, as is the case with cruelty-free products). To be labelled vegan, products cannot contain animal derivatives or by-products – such as honey, beeswax or silk for example. There are lots of plant-based alternatives available, so vegan products can still be just as effective as those formulated with animal-based products.

How products are packaged can make a difference. With increased stress on our environment it is becoming important to repurpose and recycle. Bottles and containers that are recyclable stay out of landfills and can be used in new ways. Many containers are now created using recycled packaging, meaning they are created using post-consumer recycled materials. Also watch for refillable options, or products that use less packaging as a way to cut down on waste and manufacturing.

These brands rank high on our Sustainability charts:

The cute little pouches that hold AOB shampoo and conditioner are not only chic, they are recyclable too! Plus, the design allows you to easily squeeze out every last drop of product for less waste.

green circle certified salon
Here at Chatters, we believe recycling, repurposing and diverting waste from landfills is important. Salons can generate a lot of waste. From hair clippings to colour service waste to PPE, there’s a lot to throw away at the end of each day. So we have partnered with Green Circle Salons to divert 95% of our salon waste from landfills, giving new life to our toss-outs. For more info on our Green Circle partnership click here.
